i have severe dental pain after extractions and cant sleep, can i take 10mg codeine phosphate and 10mg diazepam? i know benzos and opiates generally don't mix well but are these lower doses acceptable as a once off?

: Good control of pain will give you a good sleep. Furthermoe, codeine also has a sleepy effect. You should avoid combine narcotic analgesic and a benzo. If codeine alone is not enough, you can take it along with ibuprofen 200 mg, x 2-3 tablets and they should work for pain after tooth extraction. Take care.

Possible.: BUT do not do this on your own.  Have your doc specifically review your case and weigh the risks and benefits.

They don't: Benzodiazepines do not counteract opiates at all.  In fact their sedative effect adds to that of opiates, and makes respiratory depression (stopping breathing) more likely.  Very dangerous combination.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Dilaudid, or hydromorphone, is a potent opioid.  Additionally, if you have been off opioids for some time, your body may react to them stronger than if you were still taking them.  You need to consult with a physician to determine the cause of your pain before beginning opioid therapy.

Sedative combo: Great question. There are many instances where one could take these two together, safely. It should only be done under the care of a physician. Keep in mind that these two types of medications  are additive. That is, although opioids are intended for pain, they also sedate. In someone that has rarely taken these medicines, the two together may cause dangerous over sedation. Good luck.

Benzosdiazepines: Yes. The benzos are frequently known to become addicted.The person might deny this but becomes angry at not being given increasing doses. My mother in law was  92 when she died and she was on a tiny dose of valium.When she stopped the valium due to new doctor, she became confused, then broke her hip and died shortly afterwards.

Misusing: If you continue to do this - you may die. Firstly - do not let these medications stay in the home. Secondly - get help you have a problem.

will fentanyl show up on a urine drug screen saying it is only testing for opiates and benzos? not specifically fentanyl though

Fentanyl: IS an opiate but does not show up on routine urine testing HOWEVER  many Companies ask for COMPLETE drug screening which can include Fentanyl testing so don't "figure" you can use Fentanyl and pass your test!!!! The half life is about 12 hours thus it will show up for a few days after use! the HAIR will be positive for a lot longer time!

will flexeril help w/panic attacks? been takin xanax, (alprazolam) now my dr is takin me off them only cuz the cdc told him not 2 give benzos w/opiates.

Not at all: Flexeril is a muscle relaxant, and has little if any psycho-active benefits.  It will not help anxiety attacks.  Xanax (alprazolam) is a classic, but many other drugs could be used, even Beta blockers.  But am concerned about your doctor's comments, and suggest you find a second opinion at this point.

Opiates: Cross addiction to sedatives is very possible, due to reinforcing effects.
