Tender: Well my personal experience is that it hurts during the anesthetic injection, but thereafter, there is mild discomfort for several days. Your activities need to be curtailed for several days, and you need to take care of the woud with antibiotic ointment. It is best to have a dermatologist or podiatrist treat ingrown nails.

If it is a chronic problem, a matrixectomy may be suggested.  Have it checked.
