Ingrown nails: It is not a good idea to remove an ingrown nail by oneself. Cutting the nail incorrectly can cause the nail to become even more ingrown. More importantly, if there is an open sore or wound after removing the ingrown nail, that opens the door to bacteria, which can cause an infection. It is best to have a dermatologist or podiatrist treat ingrown nails.

See a doctor.: I would not recommend removing your own toenail. If you've had a trauma to the nail or it's ingrown or infected, see a doctor: they can numb your toe and remove the nail in the office, in a controlled environment. I never recommend self-administered "bathroom surgery"!
