is it safe to use the oral pain medication orajel while you are pregnant?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Orajel is the same as topical anesthetic which is often used as an numbing agent prior to injections of local anesthetic. It penetrates only the outer most layer of the gum tissue. Used sparingly, it should not travel systemically in which case it should be safe to use. Pregnant patients with necessary dental work receive not only topical anesthetic but local anesthetic as well.

my 22year old daughter has a 2nd degree sunburn.  we have neen treating it with liticane & alovera spray and oral pain medication.?

Accepted Answer

Sounds good: You can overdose on lidocaine, though, so be careful.  Also, second degree means blisters -- if you can, do not pop them.  The fluid inside is sterile.  It's better if they deflate on their own.  Once they open, the roof should be removed to avoid infection, and the wounds covered with topical antibiotic (neosporin or silvadene) to decrease scarring.

i'm on pain medication after some oral surgery anything besides ice i can do for the swelling?

Ibuprofen 800mg: Every 6 hours (unless you have a contraindication), sleep slightly elevated, switch over to moist heat application after 48 hours.  Sometimes steroids are given intra-operatively and even post-operatively if significant swelling is anticipated.  Normal body response to surgery.  Also just has to "run its course".

i have recently been diagnosed with generalized adenomyosis, i am currently experiencing pain on the left abdomen and pain medication isnt working. i also stopped taking oral contraceptives on my last period. what could be causing the pain?

Possible answers: First, would consider Gynecologist visit and evaluation for endometriosis, or ovarian cyst.  But colon problems and other bowel issues should not be overlooked.  A kidney stone might present this way.  So, just looking at this in general, it would benefit you to track this down thoroughly.

i am 7 weeks pregnant. is taking pain killers not allowed?  what type of pain medication can harm my baby?

Accepted Answer

Aspirin and Typenol: Acetaminophen is believed to be safe in pregnancy when used intermittently for short duration. It is routinely used for short-term pain relief and fever in all stages of pregnancy. During the first two trimesters of pregnancy, Aspirin may only be given during pregnancy when clearly needed for the short course & not in large doses. Do not use Aspirin during the last trimester of pregnancy.

i need to ask a doctor about quitting pain medication while being 35 weeks pregnant, can my baby be addicted if i quit now? i was in 2 major car accidents and been taking them the whole pregnancy thus far.

Accepted Answer

Talk to your OB: Hopefully your delivery will go to term but that is not always the case. To predict how dependent the baby is on the pain medication depends on quit date vs. delivery.  Please talk to the prescriber before making abrupt changes.

i am 2 years post-op for chiari malformation and also have cluster headaches. if iv pain medication is the only thing that helps, will/can i be admitted to the hospital until my pain can be controlled with oral medication?

Postop Chiari: That will depend on you, and your treatment team.  The choice of pain regimen will depend on your history, prior medication history  and what you and your team decide together.   There may be other choices than inpatient pain management.

Accepted Answer

Pain medication: Narcotic pain medication should be used for short periods after an injury or surgery, days to a week or two.  Try to use less pain meds every few days, follow up with appointments for your doctor or rehab if prescribed. Change to non-narcotic pain meds as soon as able. Take pain meds to make pain tolerable. If you take the medication to get rid of all pain, all the time, addiction is probable.

my wife is on nurika 75 pain medication and would like to discontinue the use.  how can we go about getting her off of this medication in a safe manner?

Accepted Answer

Best advise: Will come from current prescriber who is also aware of the condition currently being treated. Pregabalin is a controlled substance also in some countries and that's why it is important to work with only 1 or 2 physicians that can communicate among themselves as well if needed.

besides death, what can over dosing on pain medication lead to or caulse?

Accepted Answer

Stroke/encephalopath: If you od and stop breathing etc..Your brain will not get enough oxygen and may suffer anoxic encephalopathy (stroke is usually one area of brain, encephalopathy=entire brain) which maybe worse than death. Next bad thing is a heart attack. Maybe worse is you may not be looked at so nicely as a guy who abuses and od on narc...
