my infant son was sent home from daycare due to them thinking he has ringworm on his face. he has eczema and has been using a pacifier that has been rubbing the spot where the ringworm is. it did get slightly better with eczema cream. is it ringworm?

Dry skin: How old is your baby?  You can always put a mild dressing on it - Aquaphor or Eucerin if you want to be fancy, a bit of petroleum jelly/Vaseline  or A&amp;D ointment otherwise.  It is likely to subside in a few days.

my 5 weeks old baby has rash that turn to reds dry spots on his face, neck and back of his head. i am suspecting is eczema. can you advise me on which  ointment or cream i can use to clear his symptoms. thank you?

Patience: The baby acne is a common event that reflects hormones transferred during the pregnancy. While the baby is floating in moisture, the skin is will not respond, but within weeks of birth they break out for many weeks before the hormone levels begin to drop ; the acne disappears. Keeping the skin clean ; avoiding irritating soaps helps. Occasional use of a 1/2% hc once daily can calm some lesions.

if a baby had eczema, does it cause the baby skin discoloration?

Depends...: ...On what you mean by "discoloration." if you mean redness, that's a common component of eczema (and many other rashes). If you mean the lightening or darkening that persists after the rash has healed, that's called postinflammatory change, and is quite common. It goes away eventually, but often very slowly.

used desonide for baby eczema for the last 2 weeks.  how long should i take a break before resuming?

2 weeks: If you have been using desonide twice daily for 2 weeks, you should take a break for at least 2 weeks before resuming.  As a rule of thumb, 2 weeks is the maximum number of days in a row to use twice daily topical steroids.  If you are using topical steroids only once daily, then you may use them for a month.  Use caution on the face and genital regions with topical steroids (can thin skin).

Frequent Vaseline: Eczema on the body and face is in most cases transient and doesn't leave life long scars in most babies. Eczema occurs due to the skin becoming dry. Some important things to do:
1. Apply vaseline/eczema ointments 4-6 times per day
2. Use luke warm water for baths
3. Don't put soaps in the water for bathing as it leaches fat from the skin.
4. Use small amounts of  aveno baby wash/dove soap.

Eucerin or rx: First, stop all baby soaps and use dove, the white bar, for the bath. After bathing and twice a day, use eucerin cream all over. It is thick and sticky but that is why it works so well.  If that is not sufficient, see your pediatrician. Baby may need a prescription steroid cream.

How old is baby?: Only use hypoallergenic, fragrance free, sensitive skin items (laundry detergent, soap, lotions, or creams), avoid fabric softeners in the laundry. Bathe baby only 2-3 times per week.  Keep the skin hydrated with a good emollient (thicker than lotion). Talk you your pediatrician about the issue to get full evaluation and to ensure it really is eczema and discuss other measure you can take.

what are the side effects of daily cortisone cream for a baby with severe face eczema?

Overuse of...: ...Cortisone creams can cause  thinning of the skin, which sometimes results in permanent stretch marks. Fine blood vessels may swell and become prominent under the skin surface. In rare cases enough cortisone might be absorbed internally to cause growth suppression or adrenal gland suppression. That's why dermatologists use only the mildest steroid creams on babies, and monitor them closely.
