A  None I'm aware of: Autism, or the expanded spectrum, label placed on kids or adults with behaviors & differences in function that fit a specific pattern. There is no medication that i'm aware of for autism, although many have been tried over the years. Each patient may have individual needs based on testing & exam that would deserve medications. These would be prescribed & monitored on a case by case basis.

No, but individuals: with ASD have varied symtoms and medicaions may be useful intreating specific symtpoms, such as hyperactivity or anxiety or aggression with medicaions that are used with other primary disorders, such as anxiety disorder or ADHD.  Consultation with a specialist is a medical center may be helpful.

Meds/ASD: ASD is a developmental disorder and inherently commonly genetic. There can be environmental
influences on gene mutations, but medications have not been found to be causative.
OCD can also be genetic and environmentally influenced. It may have been caused by increased 
anxiety or other causes besides meds, just timed while taking them.

No medication: Although doctors have tried medications thinking these could be related to OCD, there hasn't been much success.  The language is due to problems developing original speech, so she relies on phrases that somehow connected with her. The behaviors can be related to sensory needs, a means of self calming or a means of understanding their body and world. Speech and OT can help expand her skills.

how do you know if you need medication for depression?  i'm having a very difficult time dealing with my son's autism diagnosis.

Depression Rx start: Feelings of being "down" or depressed are common after major life stressors.  The "by the book" answer is that if you have 5 out of 9 diagnostic symptoms of depression present after two weeks, you "qualify" for the diagnosis.  These 9 sxs are available online.  The clinical reality is that if you are having extreme sxs, medication might be very helpful.  Do not neglect talk therapy as well.

are there any medications or supplements that can help my son's high-functioning autism?

Autism meds: Vitamin D and Omega 3 fish oils are helpful.  Sometimes extra iron is useful if ferritin is low. Beyond those, everything else is on a case by case basis.  Talk to your pediatrician or a developmental pediatrician and/or psychiatrist for other useful meds and supplements for your specific child.

: Researchers have tried a variety of medications in the past decades to assist these impairments of function with inconsistent results. Most patients have a unique expression of their disorder and may or may not respond to a trial of ADHD meds. If tried any benefit should be noticeable within the first days of a trial. I doubt it would be a benefit but each case is unique.

Antiepileptic: Yes, this is something you need to discuss with your ob.  Monitoring can be done, to help determine if there are any anomalies.. Do not just stop the medication though, because seizures can cause a bigger problem for the fetus.

what medication can a person with petit mal epilepsy if they take latuda (lurasidone) for their paranoid schizophrenia and autism?

Accepted Answer

Oooh, good question: The two most commonly prescribed meds for absence (petit mal) epilepsy are ethosuximide and valproate.  Both interact with Latuda (lurasidone) by an additive effect of psychomotor retardation (dullness) and risk of depression.  This can be managed by slow ramp-up of drugs, clear information of what to look for, and input from famiily/friends about overall function.  With dose adjustments both may be managed.
