what to do if i feel really awkward when i look someone in the eye. is it because i have autism?

It is often part: People with autism are frequently 'more sensitive' to many things.  Direct eye contact is often perceived as 'too intense'.  And thins make social interaction more difficult because direct eye contact is a part of communication and seen as a sign of respectfulness.  This might be worth working on in a counseling relationship. Develop strategies that can help you to become more comfortable with it.

Could be normal: As they say, there are no "pathognomic signs" -- nothing which definitively establishes that a person has this or that disorder. So it could be normal; it could be not normal but not autism; or it could conceivably be autism.  However, it would be unwise to be concerned that avoiding eye contact alone, as an isolated feature, points to autism, when it may be, as you suggest, nothing.

Many people: Difficulty with eye contact has to do with how one processes information and the difficulty is not confined to one type of diagnosis.  Many people have such difficulty and inability to overcome it may result in dysfunction . People with anxiety of many sorts may find eye direct contact a bit overwhelming. Definitely worth working on -it can become much easier with effort and self talk.

No: That would more commonly be the sign of some type of trauma or an increased pressure in the eye. This can be from something as benign as vomiting or coughing or could be related to something more serious. It should be evaluated by a medical provider.

DiscussWithPediatric: You do not diagnose Autism this way.Even though there is delay in milestone as far as crawling is concerned as most babies learn to crawl between 7 and 10 months age.But some babies are late and it is not a sign of autism.Discuss your concern with baby's Pediatrician at next well baby visit at 12 months age
