It depends: They are both the same class of medication and work in very similar ways.  For most purposes consider them the same.  The timing between doses would depend on the dose taken.  In general, at the usual doses you would wait 6 hours between dosing.  Always be careful mixing medication, follow the instructions and if you are unsure ask!

Older antihstamines: Both medications are sedating antihistamines. Diphenhydramine is available over the counter in many forms; the best known brand name is benadryl (diphenhydramine). Prescription strength is 50mg. Atarax is available only by prescription, generic name is Hydroxyzine chloride (there is also Hydroxyzine pamoate, vistaril). If one takes either medication, that person should not drive.

Diphenhydramine ?: People have a tendency to take benadryl- diphenhydramine  for sleeplessness. Ideally is not the good medicine for anxiety. Side effects are more .Has some effects on the central nervous system ,can cause confusion -especially in elderly people, mouth dryness, fast heart rate,urinary retention -more evident in elderly men with big prostate glands.We call this as anticholinergic effect.Hydroxine-ok

: Using benadryl together with tramadol may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Using hydroxyzine together with tramadol can cause additive central nervous system depression and can lead to serious side effects including respiratory distress. The Benadryl is less problematic than the Hydroxyzine.

Maybe...: I only found one head to head comparison and the study was small. Seems that hydroxyzine has more "anti-itch" effect. The side effects were similar.  In a non-scientific website surveying users, seems that Hydroxyzine had more reported side effects.  I would like to know what kind of effect are you looking for.  They both have some similar and different actions.

Not same effects: In same class of drugs as Diphenhydramine but has antagonistic effects on several receptor sites in the brain which means it works to treat anxiety, mild depression and unhealthy thought processes.
