: If your anemia is the common iron deficiency anemia that many menstruating females get , then your urinary tract infections are probably unrelated to your anemia.

Could be: One way they might be related is if the diabetes leads to kidney disease.  Chronic kidney disease can cause anemia.  Diabetes raises the question of good nutrition, and malnutrition of various sorts can cause anemia. Diabetes and thyroid disease sometimes occur together and thyroid disease can contribute to anemia as well.

when should i stop taking iron pills? im off and on with anemia. i had a physical in november and it showed slight anemia. i take my pills everyday + multi vitam and can feel that im better. should i continue taking them? its almost a year later.

Ferritin? hematocrit: 'Slight anemia" is not a valid diagnosis. Exactly what lab values were reported? Do you have heavy menstrual bleeding? Are you a blood donor or have you lost blood in some way? Do you have low serum iron [ferritin]? There are many anemias, of which iron deficiency is only one. Or are you at the low end of normal? Your Dr owes you a better evaluation and discussion. The multivitamin is not relevant

If count is too low: Simply speaking, red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues.  When your RBC count is below normal, you have anemia - normocytic normochromic is one type. Anytime the RBC count gets truly low - it becomes life-threatening because not enough oxygen gets to the tissues. How low it takes to become dangerous depends on your age, other medical issues, and other factors.

The basics: Blood counts reflect red blood cell production &amp; loss. RBC's wear out (~100 days) &amp; must be replaced.They can also be lost in menses, obvious bleeding or hidden bleeding from such places as your gut. Iron is a rate limiting component for production &amp; is lost through bleeding. If your diet or supplements do not keep up with your iron losses, you become anemic. It is a lifelong issue. Some&gt;others.

my ferritin levels are 38.5 ng/ml and the lab that did the test has a range of 20-400 ng/ml. i know it falls within the normal range but its very close to being low and i have several symptoms of anemia. would this be considered low normal?

: Why was the ferritin checked and was that done by a medical personnel is what I wonder, because nobody in the medical profession would use ferritin by itself in evaluation of anybody for anemia. You should discuss with the person that ordered the tests for you because if your hemoglobin is normal there should not be any reason for concern. What is in the blood may not be all that is in the body.

Two measurements: The first measurement is hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells).  This is reported as grams per 100 ml (g/dl).  Values <12 (14 for men) are considered anemic. The second is hematocrit.  This indicates the % of volume of blood taken up by red blood cells.  Values <36 (42 for men) are considered anemic. Note: different labs might have slightly differing normal ranges.
