Cloxacillin: Boils are usually caused by staphylococcus aureus.  Over 90% of s.Aureus are resistant to Amoxicillin while depending on the local amount of mrsa, cloxacillin will be active against 60-70% of s.Aureus.  All MRSA will be resistant to both these drugs.  Mrsa is usually treated orally with septra/bactrim, Doxycycline or clindamycin.

No: No antibiotic is very effective against boils, which usually need to be opened and drained.  But Amoxicillin would be particularly ineffective, since it doesn't treat staph, the most common cause of boils.

Caution: I would choose Clindamycin over Amox as I suspect you have MRSA .... BUT it is very unwise to take old medicines and left over meds means you didn't complete the original treatment. Not taking the full course of antibiotics only partially treats the germ - kills the weak ones and teaches the strong ones to fight harder next time. Soon the meds may not work. See your MD to get full course again.

Needs: Incision and drainage.  Antibiotics, and warm compresses can only contain an abscess.  Drainage either spontaneous or surgical is curative.  Good urgent care center should be able to perform this for you.

You can: It will give you relief and you are on an antibiotic, however you need to see a dentist to treat the cause of the gum boil.

Better to wait: Amoxicillin may not be the best antibiotic for this, and in any case it's not a pain pill; antibiotics require a few days to start to help. If you're not having fever, spreading redness, or serious enlargement of the "boil", you should wait until you have been examined by your ObG then follow his or her advice. Good luck!

Follow up care: You're doing everything right so far, but the boil may have other ideas.  If it continues to grow, gets more painful or you get a fever, you need follow up.  Sometimes, a simple outpatient procedure called an Incision and Drainage is the only way to clear up the problem.  However, do not try this at home!

Usually 1-3 days: But cannot say for sure--depends on what triggered the boil/abscess--if it is still present, then you will continue to see pus and the cavity may need washed out.
