my son got toothpaste in his eye. the direction say to flush copiously for 10 min. i used  natural spring water (deer park) i didn't even think of it not being purified or distilled.  is there any way he can get and amoeba or parasite brain infection?

: No. Using bottled water to wash out the eye does not put your child at risk for amoeba or other parasite infection.

Depends on parasite: There are many different types of parasites that may live in the intestine.  With a light parasite burden, there may be no symptoms.  With a heavier burden there may be vague abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, anemia, allergic symptoms, peri-anal itching, biliary and intestinal obstruction etc.

Parasites: There are all degrees of gastrointestinal manifestations with celiac patietns. Some are even latent. A number of intestinal parasites can cuase symptoms that produce similar symptoms but testing can seperate the two problems. One could even have both.

It is possible.: Genitourinary amebiasis is a very rare condition with a few reports documented in the literature. Infection with entamoeba histolytica usually results in intestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. An infection of the urinary tract can occur by formation of a kidney abscess or if introduced into the urethra. Symptoms include pain, frequency, and urgency with urination.

Difficult to say: The best evidence comes from measuring larvae in the organs (liver, brain, eye) of mice after feeding them toxocara eggs. The liver may be infected as soon as 7 days after ingestion. The brain takes longer & the eyes are the last to be infected. Infection is more likely with frequent ingestion of large amounts of eggs. Many people never get infection after ingestion.Some may become ill years later.

Some asymptomatic: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, symptoms of malabsorption, itching around the anus and other symptoms may occur, but sometimes you may have none.

It is standard to check for ova and parasites in the stool with three repeated tests.

Yes : There are a number of bacterial and parasitic intestinal pathogens that could cause illness within 2 weeks of ingestion.  If you have symptoms and are concerned see your md and get stool culture, o&p, giardia and cryptosporidium antigen tests.

You can't.: From symptoms alone, it would be impossible to differentiate IBS from a parasitic infection. However, if you have had a negative parasite exam performed by a reliable lab, the chances of a parasitic infection are very small. If you persist in having uncontrollable diarrhea, see your doctor or a gastroenterologist for further advice. Good luck.
