AML m0 type: Prognosis of AML depends upon the age of patient, comorbid conditions and how they can tolerate and navigate through the induction and consolidation therapies. Some cytogenetic features also impart worse prognosis. Type m0 is highly treatable and good chance of a therapeutic response. Stem cell transplant eval should also be done at a bigger center.

I am so sorry: I too have lost a son and have many questions.  Believe me - there are no adequate answers.  AML is a horrible disease.  Rarely is there good outcome.  Rarely is there reason or cause.  Rarely is there cure.  Many present so severe no treatment would be adequate.  This was probably true in her case.  Write down your questions and go to her doctor and request a long talk.  You should get answers.

Variable, worse &gt;65Y: The prognosis in AML is variable/ is based on age(worse in &gt;60 yr olds) and cytogenetic changes in the leukemic cells.
Low platelets are common and often fluctuate as observed in this case.
Find out the genetic subtype of his AML. Achievement of complete remission(CR) with the first cycle of chemo(4 weeks time) is a good sign. What date did he start his chemo?

That is Ur Doct's jo: It probably does not matter. But it is an old classification. A Hematopathologist is the best person to make this distinction.The modern treatment for AML does not dwell on the FAB types, as they are called.... it is all about genomic profiles and Karyotypes that matter in choosing the treatment for patients with AML.

Varies alot: There is no easy answer to this question. AML may be curable in about 40% of people. Left untreated, a person with AML might die within 6 weeks. As you can see, the prognosis varies quite a bit.

Talk to hematologist: Your long-term outlook depends on a number of factors including your age and prior general health.  The most important factors are the genetic characteristics of the abnormal myeloid cells.  Your hematologist has or can obtain detailed information about the genetics of the disease.  There is no guarantee; you will need continued surveillance.
