A Hematopathologist is the best person to make this distinction.The modern treatment for AML does not dwell on the FAB types, as they are called.... it is all about genomic profiles and Karyotypes that matter in choosing the treatment for patients with AML.

French, American and: ...British doctors previously got together and classified acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on the appearance of the microscopic appearance of the cells, and called these M1 to M7. In the M4 and M5 subtypes, leukemic cells show some of the same features as monocytes (a type of white blood cell). These microscopic descriptions are not as important as molecular and genetic features for treatment.
