how come there is no general health doctor that is not allowed to prescribe prescriptions? like how there are psychiatrists (allowed to prescribe prescriptions) and psychologists (not allowed to prescribe prescriptions)?

Psychiatrists : Psychiatrists have gone to medical school just like surgeons and family practice doctors.  That education has given them the knowledge of physiology and pharmacology needed to safely prescribe medications.  Psychologists have not gone to medical school.  They typically have a college degree in psychology - possibly a master's or phd, but do not have a medical degree and so cannot legally prescribe medications.

does restasis allow to use for long term ? prescription for restasis should be used ?

Eye dryness: Restasis is used to quiet down inflammation which inhibits the release of tears.  After about one month introduction period, you should start feeling better.  If there is no change, the reason for the dryness is something else.  Restasis can be used for a long term but eventually it would be useful to stop for several months and see if the dryness has disappeared.

why do docs don't want the law to allow psychologists to prescribe meds?

No medical education: This is controversial, as psychologists in some states are legally able to prescribe psychiatric medications after a course in psychopharmacology. This is not the same as having the depth and breadth of 4 years of medical education, or serving a 4 year psychiatric medicine residency (which includes general medicine rotations). Treating with meds is much more involved than writing scrips alone.

Ask your doctor...: Different practices have different policies. Perhaps your doc is stating that he wants up to 3 days to process refill requests. In other words, don't wait until bottle is empty &amp; then call in expecting same day availability of medications at pharmacy. In fact, regardless of office, it's not a bad idea to ask for refill once you can guestimate number of pills remaining, especially if using mailorde

: This is the HT public forum where volunteer docs answer health questions. We do not provide or refill prescriptions, write notes or otherwise treat anyone. State medical boards require a doc have a relationship with anyone they treat, records &amp; sometimes exam and vital signs. Failure to do so can result in loss or restriction of license. Iodine: is easily converted to iodide. Salt has it in the iodate form

Since people are getting it in the iodate form and it converts easily back and forth, not much reason to give it in both forms. The liquid is iodine, the tablet is potassium iodide.
Mainly, do NOT take huge doses because it causes heavy metal toxicity (u need a LOT before it is toxic, however)

Pharmacy: Check with your pharmacy first, after allowing couple of hours. If prescription not called in call back the doc’s office to make sure the prescription was sent in.

if i take a small piece of 0.5 of my prescription xanex every night for 14 years and stop. will i have withdrawals? or is that too small of a dose? new dr says cant prescribe it?

: The small amount in the question should not cause withdrawal symptoms when stopped.  It is questionable whether the "small piece" of a "0.5 Xanex" will be effective in promoting sleep in any case, as accommodation to this dose usually negates the intended effect.

optometrists and opticians, would you ever prescribe contacts for a prescription of 0.00?

Accepted Answer

Why: A prescription of 0.0 conveys no correction.  A contact termed a bandage lens is sometimes given to help surface disease of the eye heal quicker and more comfortably.  But why wear a contact with no correction unless it is a colored lens with a desire to modify the iris color of the eye for cosmetic reasons.

75yo grandfather severe pain on both shoulder blades. mri,normal.pcp prescription norco+suggested pt.pain doesn't allow sleep at night.what can this be?

Accepted Answer

The back/neck : May be stemming from the Thoracic spine or cervical spine. Other consideration are other muscles/tendons/ligaments/fascia in the area.
