Well studied/no cure: Stimulants for adhd are the best-studied medicines in all of child mental health.  They produce prompt relief of key symptoms in 65-85 of patients with relatively few side effects and high safety.  They often help patients, families, and teachers cope with the most disturbing symptoms.  But, they do not change the course of illness, are not sompletely safe, & may deter other needed interventions.

Yes: Yes, someone with adhd can still get addicted to stimulants if s/he uses them incorrectly.  I have known patients who use their entire months' supply of medication in just a few days, and then have none for the rest of the month.

Greater focus: Just like people with adhd stimulants with help other with focus and increased concentration, unlike antidepressants, which will not make people without depression or anxiety more serene or happy.

Maybe: Nuvigil is sometimes used to treat adhd.  It is a narclrpsy med.  I do not use it for adhd in young patients, but adults do very well on it.

OT ?????????: I can certainly see where anyone that has contact with a kid may feel he is inattentive, but I don't see where an OT has the qualifications to recommend anything more than an evaluation. Far to many observers anoint themselves as expert in this area. I would bring it up with the kids doc but might also report the OT to their supervisor.

Ritalin (methylphenidate): Ritalin (methylphenidate) does not stunt puberty. One of the major side effects is appetite suppression(curbs appetite). If a person in any situation is not eating enough growth will be slowed. Children who take Ritalin (methylphenidate) or any adhd medication should be monitored regularly by their doctor.  Encouraging kids to eat before the medicine kicks in and when it wears off is important.

ADHD Meds: The meds for adhd are usually time  dependent meaning stays in system for a duration then washout.Ritalin if you are taking the short acting will not be of much help if you are working late in the night.Discuss with your doc med adjustment or consider new gen long duration meds like Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) xr vyvanse Ritalin sr, Ritalin sr , concerta, Metadate CD metade er, Adderall xr.

Congratulations!: As long as you are focused on pursuing a career in medicine for the right reasons, you'll be doing well! To answer your question, Ritalin (methylphenidate) has been used for ADHD for more than 50 years, and there have not been any well documented long term adverse effects for long term use. The positive effect is it allows you to do well enough to want to study medicine!  You take is as long as it helps you function.
