Yes: The majority cause unilateral or asymmetric hearing loss as the first and sometimes only symptom.  This hearing loss is always permanent.

Tinnitus and hearing: Hearing loss usually is associated with tinnitus.  The loss can come from damage to the auditory nerve, or the hearing portion of the inner ear (both, which also as a vestibular component).  There can be vascular damage, infection or hereditary causes.  Sometimes trauma, or exposure to loud noises unilaterally can cause this.

i have unilateral tinnitus from about 4 months, feel a little unsteady sometimes. no hearing loss.  worried abt acoustic neuroma , is it common?

Rare: Your doctor is doing the right thing by getting the mri. "sounds" like you've already had a hearing test, which is really necessary too.  You are very young to have this, unless you have neurofibromatosis- which you would likely know if you did. I've never seen it in someone as young as you.

is vertigo to be expected with single sided sensorineural hearing loss (severe) even if there is no acoustic neuroma involved? i get occasional very short episodes (1-2 seconds). two mris of iac/head came back normal?

Acoustic neuroma: Usually is result of multiple ear infections as a child but you should see an ENT  as soon as possible.

: Not clear from your post  whether you or family member have a neuroma, or if this is a theoretical question.  Since there are numerous variables, this cannot be precisely answered in this forum. Recommend more information at Mayo Clinic  or Johns Hopkins websites.

: Large number of patients your age, develop hearing loss due to life-long noise exposure and degenerative change.  An acoustic neuroma is typically unilateral and is accompanied by additional neurological problems.  The symptoms do NOT vary from side to side.
If the concern for a tumor is preoccupying your thoughts, discuss your issue with an otolaryngologist.

dx w/ sshl after 7days of low tone hearing loss/tinnitus -no vertigo. on predinsone. saw neuro, did exam and baer both normal. wants mri. chances i have brain tumor or acoustic neuroma?  so scared.

I empathize: I understand your fear, which is completely natural when you hear that a tumor is a possibility for your symptoms. All I can say is hang in there. Do the tests as your doctor asks. In medicine we usually rule out the worst and most dangerous conditions first, so the MRI is a reasonable step. There are many other possibilities, however. Be sure to talk to your support people, and keep your chin up!
