i had a root canal 3 weeks ago and just had the crown put in, after a week i have such a dull ache and my tooth is sensitive to hot, is it infected?

Second opinion: Please get that tooth checked again for peri apical pathosis or it could be the periodontal situation . The tissue around the tooth .X ray and periodontal checkup will determine the outcome of the situation . Also have the dentist check the occlusion or if there any premature contact with opposing tooth after placing the crown.

Complex: The root canal treatment is probably now recontaminated and usually will need to be 'retreated'. However, if this loosening has occurred, then it may be that there is not enough solid tooth to support the crown and biting forces. Might not be a good idea to fix this, but rather extract it and have an implant placed with a crown after 3 - 4 months. See prosthodontist for options. Good luck.

Some : Some tenderness is normal after a root canal. It usually subsides after 2-7 days.  If it is keeping you awake at night then i would call your dentist.   If this is a molar, there could be an extra canal that could be causing the pain.  This happens sometimes.  I am not sure if you went to a dentist or endodontist.  An endodontist specializes in root canals.  At the very least i would call your dentist as 3 weeks is long enough to allow the tooth to calm down.

It happens: The tissues around the tooth are sore from the procedure. Were you infected? Were you taking antibiotics? Were you in pain before the root canal therapy was started? Answers to these questions would help formulate a better answer. Since the dentist treating you knows your tooth better than anyone, give them a call to discuss your discomfort.

Other nerves: You've got nerves in the tissues surrounding your teeth... these nerves can be inflamed resulting in your discomfort. NSAIDs should help decrease your discomfort.

i had a bad abscess last april, it was so infected i was on medicine until august and then finally my root canal started which was a combination of 3 more visits to complete it.  my tooth still is sore on and off and a bad oder comes from it.  i don't fee

In : In sorry to hear about such a longstanding problem.

Without a physical exam with radiographs, i cannot tell what is happening with that tooth. But i can tell you that four months to heal up an infection is quite a long time. The root canal was completed, and you now need a crown. So far, everything sounds routine.

That your tooth is still sore concerns me the most. It shouldn't be so sore seven months after the root canal. The odor could be from food and bacteria getting caught in the unrestored tooth.

If you feel uncomfortable with the dentist who has treated you, find another dentist from a trusted recommendation  and get a second opinion on if this tooth is even restorable.

Hematoma or abscess?: It could be normal post-op healing and pain, a hematoma, or a developing abscess. If it persists for several more days, or gets worse, I would go back to see your dentist.
