These often leave people feeling hung over the following morning.  They are also not good over the long term.  Melatonin, which you will find in the vitamin section, is effective and safe.  Developing a regular bedtime routine may also help over time and,is your safest and most effective option.

Others: I would try to first find out what is causing the sleep disturbance. May want to see your primary care md to assess. Possible sleeping agents include Benadryl and melatonin, which are over the counter, Ambien , lunesta, sonata, (zaleplon) trazodone, rozerem, etc.

Yes: Melatonin is safe. You can also try Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Don't use Tylenol pm as a sleep aid only since it has acetaminophen (in addition to the Benadryl (diphenhydramine)) which you probably not need.

Neuropsych eval: Get a neuropsychological evaluation from a neuropsychologist board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology to assess what areas of the brain have been effected by the concussion and how it factors into current sleep loss.

I'd be careful ...: As you know, manufacture of herbal supplements is not regulated so their purity, safety and effectiveness can not be guaranteed. You are on some medicines, including Lamictal and Toviaz, (fesoterodine) which are unique and actually could interact with quite a few things. Somnopure contains valerian extract &amp; Puritea contains ginseng. I hate to discourage something that sounds so promising, but I would avoid.

Antipsychotic: Useful for bipolar disorder and squizophrenia, seroquel (quetiapine) antagonizes serotonon and Dopamine receptores. Somnolence is a side efect useful for pts with insomnia.

i am under alot of stress lately and find it hard to sleep or stay asleep. sometimes i take melatonin 10 mg and or nyqil sleep aid. sometime neither of them work. would a prescribed sleep medication work better?

Sleep hygiene: Remains best, being able to do light exercise during the day, no food close to bedtime, easy on electronics and tv during late hours allowing for the stress accumulated during the day to be absorbed. It is between the mind and the body, finding the delicate balance, and with the understanding that nights will not be the same as days are not the same.
