Not necessarily: Antibiotics, in conjunction with the start of root canal therapy is the best way to get rid of the infection fast. Antibiotics alone don't always do the trick, and you may need a different one for your infection. See a local dentist for treatment, since the antibiotics will not fix the tooth and it will become reinfected very quickly.

Oral surgeon or ER : Go to a oral surgeon now. This is serious. If a oral surgeon is not available you should go to the emergency room.

Get help: An abscess can turn into a dangerous problem dont suffer for no reason
if penicillin isn't helping you need to see your dentist to eliminate the cause and perhaps you will need a different antibiotic
dont leave it. Eliminate the cause of the abscess.

Jaw Pain: Unfortunately, sometimes when we have a serious situation such as you do we just have to go be seen despite the fact we have no insurance.  Most of us don't have dental insurance.  You need to get this taken care of as this potentially could be disfiguring and even life threatening.  Explain your situation to who cares for you, they may be able to help with payments etc.  Good luck.

Might: Was it very severe and now is mild? That's normal. Is getting worse instead than better: tht's not normal.

a 31 year old male with abcess/decayed teeth came to er 3 days ago and was treated with penicillin. now has extreme facial swelling. after 3 days of treatment, patient'spain has increased and swelling is increasing even with antinflammatory treatment. pat

Hello. : Hello. The man needs  dental or oral surgery care asap. I could not find free or sliding fee scale dental care in stanfield, north carolina. But i did find that stanfield is in stanly county. Stanly country has the stanly county health department which  is located at 1000 n. First street, suite 3, albemarle, nc). Clinic fees are based on the patientâ€™s household income.  Clinic fees are reduced for those with less income. They do not take private insurance.
      Health department clinical hours are m-f, 8:30am-4:00pm; health department office hours, m-f 8:30am-5:00pm; environmental health hours are 8:30am-5:00pm; animal control hours are m-f, 9:30am-4:00pm & sat. 10:00am-12:00noon; dental clinic hours are: m-th, 7:30am - 5:30pm.  Dental clinic office hours are: m-th, 8:00am-5:30pm & f, 8:00am-11:30am.  There are no dental clinic hours on fridays.
      You need to make an appointment by calling 704-986-3099.  You need to bring the following with you: proof of household income, identification, and medicare/medicare card, check, or cash.  If you have no form of assistance and can not contribute any money what so ever for the dental/ medical care that you will be receiving - i don't know what to suggest. You could ask them about other options if you aren't able to assist at all for the cost of treatment.

Usually 2-3d, but...: Not all infections will respond to penicillin or antibiotics.  2 reasons come to mind. 1) poor blood supply to the abscess and no blood supply to the tooth supplying the infection. 2) some bacteria are resistant.  If non reponsive to the medicine, others can be added to increase effectiveness.  Ultimately, you shouldn't rely on the antibiotics but should instead have it treated endodontically.

Sorry : Sorry to hear about your problem.

The antibiotics can take a day to really start working, so you need to give them some time. My concern is that you have not stopped swelling. It could be that you may need a different antibiotic, or the abscess my need to be drained to help the antibiotics fight off the infection.

The best thing is to see the oral surgeon today, but if that is not possible, you need to go back to the emergency room to be reevaluated.

Drain the abscess: The best treatment for an abscess is to get it drained as soon as possible.  The antibiotic can take a long time to penetrate the abscess and make a difference.

I and D: Yes, you need to go back for an evaluation and treatment asap. Most ER's have no dental specialist to treat you. You are better off seeing a dentist (probably an Endodontist or Periodontist depending upon the cause of the abscess). However, if you cannot get an appointment right away, go back to the ER.  A change in dosage, frequency, or antibiotic + further treatment is probably in order.
