i went to a dentist for tooth extraction to remove abscess near a root canal treated tooth but in the surgery it turned to be a cyst, they opend  it and tried to clean it. what could cause a cyst?is there any step i should do after the surgery?

Can happen: Some of the buccal bone can break during an extraction.  There are even times that the roots of the tooth are not even in bone on the buccal surface.

wouldnt a steroid (decadron) be more dangerous than helpful to help with inflamation after tooth extractions if i have an ongoing infection? wouldnt it make the infection more likely to spread ? should i decline the steroid during surgery?

: I too would worry about it but my reading revealsthat it's common practice to prescribe corticosteroids to prevent or minimize post dental extraction inflammation. I'd follow the advice of your treating dentist or oral surgeon.

Potentially: If there is severe pain and pressure, sometimes fully effective numbing of the area can not  be achieved and the extraction may be painful. Other times, the tooth may  be extracted without pain.

in your experience, just how often does an adult get a periodontal abscess? the one i had just resulted in extraction. i see the dentist regularly.

Shouldn't happen: With proper understanding and daily management periodontal disease and tooth decay can be stopped. By learning how to properly take care of your teeth daily, you can stop further occurrences. Ask your dentist and dental hygienist to take the time to teach you how you personally need to manage yourself day to day. That is the best solution.

Cannot predict: Without seeing the area before and after and the damage done by the abscess it is not possible to say. Are you on antibiotic ? Often this will help the swelling go down. Keep an eye on it as sometimes these do not heal right away and require further drainage. Do not hesitate to contact the Dentist who did the extraction if unsure. Good Luck.
