Not uncommon: About 20% because I am known for treating very anxious patients. The one thing those patients seem to have in common is that they all think they are the worst I have seen. My guess is that is your real question. You should expect to see a dentist and not be judged.

Call another dentist: First, there must be more than one dentist in bowling green, give another office a call. Second, you can pay for treatment yourself if you have no insurance. Many dental offices are willing to work out long term payment plans with patients. Third, the emergency room is not qualified to offer definitive dental care. They might be able to give you medication for short term relief, but that is all.

Try looking online: Years ago, listings were available only in printed form. By the turn of the century, lists had become available online everywhere. Now, some lists are only online, and no longer printed. County medical-dental societies, hospitals, and insurance companies usually list doctors and dentists by name, specialty, insurance plans, and location. Look under General Dentistry or General Dentists.

Yes: It really never too early to take a child to a dentist.  Some kids are born with teeth.  There are  sometimes issues with teething that a pedodontist can help you with.  I would recomend you make an appointment with a children's dentist for a routine checkup--a pedodontist.

Unfortunately, just picking someone with an internet search or phone book is pot luck.  As a last resort you can research dentists on this site and check their credentials and recommendations.
