16 MONTHS OLD &cough: Cough in a sixteen month old especially at night needs to be ealuated if it is persistent as it cab be due to bronchial asthma and the reatment has to be with inhaled steroids and bronchodilaters, so take your baby to your pediatrician for check up anf proper treatment.The other causes like viral uper resp infections dont need any therapy as it gets better by itself, no cough medicines.

URI or allergy: It is encouraging to hear that his symptoms are improving, but cough and runny nose with clear mucous is consistent with both a viral infection as well as environmental allergies.  Since he is improving, close observation is all that's needed at this time.  
Allergic rhinitis is often accompanied by signs of itching and your child might rub at his nose, etc., and allergy meds like Zyrtec (cetirizine) may help.

Cough in less than 2: It is best to not use cough and cough suppressants in children under 2.  Most of them are not recommended for children under age 4.  There are natural remedies like zarbees that contain honey and can be used in children greater than age 1.  Also simply just try a cool humidifier and nasal saline drops for symptomatic relief.

Cool wet air: Breathing in cool moist air is usually helpful.  You can sit in the bathroom with the shower on to fill the room with mist, or you can run a humidifier.  In a pinch you can even have him breathe air from an open freezer door.  Drinking liquids helps and you could also try some Ibuprofen to try to reduce the laryngeal swelling that causes the noisy cough.  Good luck.

Cough med in toddler: Most over the counter cough and cold preparations in the children's section are not FDA approved for children  under 2 years.  Cough caused by post nasal drip may improve with an over the counter allergy medication (Zyrtec and Claritin are approved for ages 6 months and older).

Time for a visit: The possibilities for a horrible crackly cough range from a chest cold to bronchitis to an asthma flare up or pneumonia.If it is as bad as you describe & interfering with sleep , fluid intake or appetite, it would be good to have him evaluated.

Not sure: I certainly sympathize with your problem...Does she also have a fever? Any rash? Has she had anything like this in the past? Unfortunately it sounds like you need to have her examined by your pediatrician...Other than being sure she is drinking plenty of fluid ..I can't recommend anything else. Please call her dr.

Day care: Young children who go to daycare have a higher rate of colds and ear infections due to their immature immune system and immature anatomy of their eustachian tubes. If financialy feasible, they are better off to stay home with mom for the first 3-4 years!
