Cool wet air: Breathing in cool moist air is usually helpful. You can sit in the bathroom with the shower on to fill the room with mist, or you can run a humidifier. In a pinch you can even have him breathe air from an open freezer door. Drinking liquids helps and you could also try some Ibuprofen to try to reduce the laryngeal swelling that causes the noisy cough. Good luck.
