Possibly 3rd molars.: At your age, your 3rd molars (also called wisdom teeth) may be close to erupting, and you may not have space for them. This is characterized by gums raised enough that your 2nd molars bite down on them, causing a cycle of pain, inflammation, and possibly infection. This is called pericoronitis, and the treatment is usually removal of your 3rd molars. Ask your dentist to evaluate you for this.

Count back: From the front. At the middle of the front you should have 2 incisors, one eyetooth, then 2 bicuspids. The next tooth behind the bicuspids is the first molar followed by the 12 year molar and finally the wisdom tooth. If you are missing  molars and they drifted out of position, even a dentist would have a hard time identifying which is which..

Yes, with an xray: Wisdom teeth are generally the last teeth to erupt into the mouth in the very back corners behind the 12 year molars.  At your age you may have 2 molars per quadrant or three molars(if wisdom teeth are in).

Are the rest of his permanent teeth in? Are they aligned or askew?

You may want to consult with an orthodontist about your options to have them orthodontically brought into position, especially if he is going to have orthodontic care.

And no, they are not removed like wisdom teeth. He needs his second molars.
