The reality is that when you look at all of our elders, almost 1 in 4 don't live past the 1st anniversary post-op, and less than 1 in 2 return to baseline level of function.
This is because the fall & fracture represent the culmination of poor health. But as dr. Duncan points out, if this patient is an exemplar of healthy living, then her odds are in her favor. Don't forget dxa & 25oh vitd postop.

If the 85 year is in good health and was mobile before the accident she will make excellent recovery once the surgical fixation is done.
There is often some pain following the surgery, but the soft tissues heal in six weeks and walking begins the very day after the operation. Sometimes elderly people in hospital following spinal anesthesia will develop a fleeting bladder problem. Good prognosis.
