A doppler is a special type of ultrasound used to monitor a baby's heartbeat. They are used in prenatal visits and can be bought or rented for home use. They are considered safe and while not necessary, can re-assure parents that the baby is doing ok before they feel fetal movement. Once the baby's movement is noticed, then daily kick counts are just as re-assuring.
