Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is defined as an infection that occurs in a patient who has been hospitalized more than 48 hours. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are common causes. Treatment of HAP requires stronger antibiotics than are used for community acquired pneumonia.
