Many factors: The improvement of pneumonia in newborns depends on many factors such as the gestational age (preterm or full term), the reason of the pneumonia (infection in mom or involvement of meconium in the airway, maturity of the infant's lungs at birth to name a few. Once the newborn is breathing well on her own, able to eat independently (no feeding tubes or IV fluids) and more vigorous = improvement
