The same situation is the subject of 2-3 other questions in the past two days, except that was HPV found with pap smear. This isn't rare. Almost everybody gets genital HPV during their early sexually active years, which can then lie dormant and reactivate years later. You're either having reactivation of an old infection, or your wife had reactivation and transmitted HPV/warts to you.

You or your wife could have had the virus which remained dormant and then for any number of reasons became active. both of you should be checked and treated. Good luck.
