HPV is from a family of viruses known for their ability to remain dormant for decades after the primary infection clears. In some, it will never re-activate and do anything. In others it may. Cervical cancer is linked to some HPV strains and may never happen or only emerge after decades.

HPV can remain dormant for many years even decades before there are symptoms. You should see your gynecologist for an examination and Pap smear if you think you are exposed or have symptoms
