By MedicalNewsToday website: one study found that people who took prescription-strength oral progesterone capsules twice daily and those who used over-the-counter progesterone cream had similar levels of progesterone after 12 days. Long-term use of progesterone can increase the risk of side effects.

If by "short cervix" is meant that the risk of premature labor can be reduced by the use of progesterone in any form of application, this treatment will not generally prevent same. "Short cervix" with a pre-existing pre-mature or "early" delivery, may be best treated by cervical circlage. Progesterone is necessary for inadequate placental production of progesterone/miscarriage history.
