This family of viruses are surface dwellers, infecting tissues on body surfaces and not using the bloodstream to spread like many other viruses. With less exposure to the full range of immune factors the response is muted. The primary infection is cleared in 2 years leading to dormancy. It is kept dormant by immune factors but may emerge if they wain. This is their nature.

If by clearing you mean cured so it never recurs- there is no cure as yet. The immune system tries to keep the virus causing it in check and periodically with changes in it the virus manifests as lesions. There is no way yet of controlling the immune system. . Recurrence does not mean the immune system is permanently weak.
