Most oral contraceptives have 28 pills (21 colored pills that contain hormone, and 7 white pills that do not. In the absence of hormones, your body triggers the sloughing of the uterine lining. If you skip the non hormone pills, you are not allowing your body to complete the cycle and your hormones become imbalanced, this can cause spotting. For no period, consider a progesterone only pill.
