Herpes transmission: Most people with genital herpes do not know they have it. You can get herpes from a sex partner who does not have a visible sore or who may not know he or she is infected. Many people who have been exposed to herpes do not immediately have symptoms, and some only learn of exposure through a blood test. Herpes is very common in the US - approximately 1 in 6 people aged 14 to 49 have it.
