Herpes is messy: Everything we thought we knew about herpes may be wrong. New information is making it all more confusing. What we know. There are no tests yet to tell where you were infected with either type of herpes. We do know that you may shed virus and are contagious when you do have an outbreak but you can also shed virus when you do not. The only accurate tests are the antibody tests to verify infection.

HSV: Hsv is mor contagious with outbreaks but you can be contagious without an outbreak also. The only conclusive diagnosis is when a culture is positive while the patient is presenting a lesion. Blood test checking igg and igm for hsv1 and 2 only tell you that you have been exposed. If the blood tests are negative, your body has never seeen the virus.
