Yes, but unreliable: Doxycycline is very effective against syphilis, but must be taken for a full 2 to 4 weeks, depending on syphilis stage. Many people have trouble sticking to treatmet that long without missing many doses, therefore doxycycline is not normally recommended in treating syphilis. However, it is used sometimes in people who are allergic to penicillin.
