If given 14 days doxycycline for syphilis exposure instead of penicillin due to local drug shortage, can this regimen still prevent ever being infectious if started about a week before earliest possible chancre onset?

Syphilis (primary and secondary ) in patients with penicillin allergy has been successfully treated by 14-d doxycycline regimen. However, this regimen has not been utilized for prophylaxis purpose. Doxycycline post exposure prophylaxis (PEP), 200mg of doxycycline taken within 72 hours of exposure, has reduced the transmission of STIs (syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea) by 2/3.
