Hello. : Hello. It sounds like a lot has happened in your life. I would let your father know about how depressed you feel as well as letting him know about your cutting. You do need to talk with a professional. On line resources are not a substitute for therapy. Please let your dad know and ask for him to arrange for you to see a psychiatrist. If this doesn't work, most schools have counselors and i would ask to talk with one. If you are having thoughts about killing or hurting yourself again, it is very important that you get help right away. That is serious. Give your dad a chance to be your dad by asking for his help take care.

I agree w' Dr Fowler: In addition you can reach out to a school counselor who can help you speak with your mother and father. It is unclear whether your father was abusive to you. If so the advice would be different. The school psychologist will know how to help you get the help you need.

It Can, But...: Many patients with low back pain develop depression, but the cause and effect relationship is unclear. The depression is likely because they are dealing with a chronic illness on a daily basis rather than the back pain itself causing the altered mood.

No: No manic depression or bipolar disorder can be quite serious and have a devastating effect on the patient as well as loved ones. This disorder can lead to self harming behavior and other serious issues that can affect a person's health significantly. It is more than just bad mood swings although this could be a component of its presentation to one affected.

If I had post-partum depression after giving birth to my son, does this mean that my son will have depression when he grows up?

No: Depression has a genetic component, that's true. But, post-partum depression is a particular, situation-specific, concern. While your son may be predisposed to depression due to your genes, in this case the environment, and personality, are much much more important.

Does my child have to inherit the same exact mutation from both parents in order to develop cystic fibrosis?

2 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. HARRY OPSIMOS
Pediatric Pulmonology 22 years experience
No: Cystic fibrosis has been associated with over 1500 mutations. A person does not need to have the exact same 2 mutations inherited to have the disease. A CF patient can have 2 different mutations inherited from the parents. The extent of the disease may depend on what mutations a person has, but also varies from one patient to another even with the same mutations. Other factors play a role as well.
