Before implantation: Hcg is secreted by the embryo after fertilization but before implantation. The embryo reaches the blastocyst stage before it implants, with an inner cells that becomes the fetus, and trophoblast cells that make HCG and become part of the placenta. A little HCG is produced before implantation, but by the time we can *detect* HCG with a blood or urine pregnancy test implantation has already occurred.
