A few possibilities: Including hallux limitis/hallux rigidis, can also be an actual jam that occurs with a turf toe type of injury. Something like gout would be in the differetial diagnosis. For swelling and pain as long as it is not gout you can ice it. However if it is gout you need to soak in hot water. Antiinflammatoiries will work in both cases but see a doctor for clincal exam and x-ray.
