A member asked:

At what age is exposure to hsv-1 (cold sores) no longer extremely dangerous to babies? when does it become just a cold sore and not a fatal disease?

Not fatal: Although anxiety provoking and no one wishes for it, hsv-1/herpes virus is not a fatal disease unless one is quite sickly or immunosuppressed.

First exposure only: The first exposure is usually the one that is most dangerous because the immune system is still developing and may not handle the infection very well. That being said the age of when exposure to newborns is the least dangerous is usually when the immune system has had time to develop properly and can vary. By age 3 to 4 the initial outbreak is not likely to be as bad.
