SEE your doctor: A sore throat is pain and irritation of the throat that often precipitates when you swallow. The most common cause of a sore throat is a viral infection that resolves on its own with at-home care. Drink water and get a good rest. You can use otc cold medication. If your pain is not improving after 7 days, see your pcp for evaluation and treatment.
