Ideally none: A total thyroidectomy is done to remove all visible or gross thyroid tissue. We know as surgeons, that despite out best efforts, there may be a small amount of tissue left behind. That is why it is important to have post surgical radioactive iodine therapy if you are being treated for thyroid cancer.
