Start small: Some kids are very intimidated by bigger, group social situations, such as one would find in a day care center and can feel overwhelmed. They then isolate themselves. It might be much better to start with one playmate at your home and keep it short - maybe an hour of playtime once or twice a week. Let the child get used to social interaction more slowly this way if they are so inclined!
