PE tubes/grommets: These small plastic windows are inserted into the eardrum after the "glue" is removed by suction. They usually stay in place for 6 months or more before the body extrudes them. While in place, they permit small amounts of middle ear mucous to drain into the ear canal and evaporate rather than stay trapped in the ear. When the blockage of the eustachian tube clears, the tubes will no longer be needed.

Work well: The grommets, or pe tubes as we call them, work really well. If the thick fluid behind the eardrum has been there a couple of months, then it can cause decreased hearing, speech problems and other middle ear problems.
