Usually benign: Patulous dysfunction of the eustachian tube is relatively benign and does not usually lead to ear complications or otitis media. Treatment should be directed at any known underlying medical conditions. Medical therapy should be started for patients having severe symptoms lasting more than six weeks. Good hydration can be effective. This can be supplemented by nasal saline drops as needed.
