What are the specific precautions that a dentist should take to prevent fracture of mandible when removing a mandibular canine/lateral? and odds?

Awareness: If a mandible is severely resorbed as in the case of an elderly patient, the best precaution is being aware of the risk of fracture and sharing it with the patient via detailed informed consent. Appropriate imaging to r/o underlying preexisting fx or pathology and ros focusing on bone health would also be indicated before deciding about how to proceed or refer. Canine roots can be large.

Odds are low: When done properly, odds are low for fracturing the mandible when extracting lateral or canines. Odds increase however, in the case of lower 3rd molars. Prevention comes in the form of proper diagnosing and evaluation of the position of the tooth in question. The position of the tooth to the alveolar nerve and patients age also play a part in how to approach an extraction of a 3rd molar.
