Folate (folic acid) helps: If you are pregnant take folate (folic acid). It does help prevent spina bifida.

Still unlikely: It is clear that taking folic acid before and during a pregnancy lowers the risk of a child having spina bifida. There is not good reason not to take folate. It has no side effects. Even without folate, the chances are low.
