Dietary iron: Unless you have a condition known as hemochromatosis, the excess iron in your diet washes harmlessly through your digestive tract. Young men need lots of iron in general for strong muscle development and production of red cells. If you want to know the amount of iron in your body (which is more relevant), your doctor can check a transferrin saturation and ferritin level.
