Rheumatologists are: Medical docs who diagnose and treat arthritis with medicines. If the problem becomes severe that only surgery will treat it, then you need to be referred to an orthopedist, who is a surgeon. I suggest you see your pcp who'll refer you to the appropriate physician, depending on your condition. Good luck.

They overlap: Rheumatologist a are trained in internal medicine to diagnose and treat arthritis and multi system disease. Orthopedist a are surgeon trained in diagnosis and treatment of bone and joint disease. They often overlap .in this case either specialty would be fine

Rheumatologist: Both kinds of physicians treat bone and joint diseases but orthopedic physicians also perform surgery. You should see a rheumatologist first.
