Rheumatologists are: Medical docs who diagnose and treat arthritis with medicines. If the problem becomes severe that only surgery will treat it, then you need to be referred to an orthopedist, who is a surgeon. A rheumatologist is a medical doctor that treats , medical problems such as arthritis, osteoporosis or ostheoarthritis , etc.

They overlap: Rheumatologist a are trained in internal medicine to diagnose and treat arthritis and multi system disease. Orthopedist a are surgeon trained in diagnosis and treatment of bone and joint disease. They often overlap .in this case either specialty would be fine
